Tow and site a recreational vehicle safely

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to safely tow and site a recreational vehicle in off-road spaces.This unit assumes the driver possesses a current driving licence. Driving must be carried out in compliance with the licence requirements and regulations of the relevant state or territory roads and traffic authority.

Application

This unit applies to individuals whose job role involves towing and siting a recreational vehicle. This could include people who work in holiday parks or in the manufacture, service, repair or sale of recreational vehicles.

Recreational vehicles may include pop tops, expanda or slide out, full van, cross-country or an off road all-terrain caravans; camper or tent trailers; five-wheelers; slide-on campers or campervans.

Prepare for towing of recreational vehicle.

1.1

Calculate the gross weight of the recreational vehicle and determine the aggregate mass.

1.2

Check and confirm the towing capacity of the towing vehicle and adhere to tow-bar capacity.

1.3

Attach the recreational vehicle to towing vehicle in accordance with manufacturer's and state or territory specifications, requirements and regulations.

Conduct pre-operational checks on towing vehicle and recreational vehicle, taking account of all safety considerations.

Site and move recreational vehicle.

2.1

Safely manoeuvre recreational vehicle to required location.

2.2

Identify obstacles or hazards and remove or avoid as appropriate, ensuring effective communication with others.

2.3

Position recreational vehicle ensuring it is level and parallel and within reach of all required equipment by using stabilising fixtures.

2.4

Move recreational vehicle from a site, disconnecting power heads, water pipes and electrical leads, ensuring stabilising fixtures are in position prior to commencing the tow.

literacy skills to interpret regulations and requirements in relation to vehicle towing and siting

weight-to-vehicle towing ratios set by state and territory authorities and manufacturer requirements

pre-towing checking procedures

Methods of assessment

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

direct observation of the candidate preparing and towing a recreational vehicle and manoeuvring it into a space

oral and written questions to test knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements

review of portfolios of evidence and third party workplace reports of the candidate's on-the-job performance.

Holistic assessment with other units relevant to the industry sector, workplace and job role is recommended.
